Rice is a staple in our home. From white rice, to Spanish rice, to risotto, rice is one of the foundational sides with most of our dinners. I thought I would post my simple white rice recipe since this basic recipe can be tweaked to make a whole bunch of other types of rice meals.
- 2 cups of water (You can substitute water with your choice of stock or broth)
- 1 cup of white rice
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- Sprinkling of black pepper
- (Optional) 1 tablespoon of butter
Place the water (broth or stock), rice, salt, and pepper in a medium or large saucepan give it a stir and bring to a boil. Once boiling, cover and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes. The rice is done once all of the water has evaporated. Check the rice at the 15-minute mark, and if there is still water keep cooking the rice for another 5 minutes.
A Note About Rice
Cooking rice is a 2 to 1 ratio. 1-part rice to 2 parts water or 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water and so on. I usually do 2 cups of rice and 4 cups of water as it seems to make the perfect amount for our normal dinner needs. Rice does not need to cook longer the more water and rice you use. The rice should still take between 15 to 20 minutes no matter what ratio you use. Remember, the rice is done once all of the water has evaporated.
